Our Winter Wedding
Robin & I got married on 6th January 2001. Little did I know when I planned my own wedding that in 2010 we would sell the cows off the farm and start letting out a barn for weddings.
Lots of people dream of their wedding being on a lovely summer's day, but I felt like doing the opposite. My sister had a wonderful spring wedding in April 1999. On her big day the sun shone, the blossom was out and Furtho looked gorgeous. I did not want my wedding to be compared to hers, or anyone spending the day saying a "shame about the weather".
So, when we got engaged in August 2000 I dreamt of a winter wedding.
Our guests loved that the Christmas / New Year period had been extended into the following weekend. We got married in the Church here at Furtho with my father making the candelabra from recycled timber, and the whole Church was candlelit.
In England you have to get married in daylight, so we were trying to organise it so that we would be going into Church in the light, and come out as it got dark. The day before, my sister and I realised it would not be dark when we came out of Church, so we made ourselves slightly late. The Church looked absolutely stunning with flowers and candles, and our guests stood so we could get everyone in. As we left the Church the path was lit with flaming torches.
Afterwards we had our wedding reception in a marquee on the farmhouse lawn with a roast for our meal. Each table had a nominated carver who was given a joint of lamb to serve up.
In the last few years we have held a number of weddings between Christmas and New Year, including New Year's Eve;and to me these weddings always seem very special.
Winter weddings make cosy lively parties, and I would love to talk to you and share my ideas for weddings, from arrival drinks of mulled wine, hot cider or hot chocolate, to finishing the evening with sparklers.
Here are a selection of winter weddings which have been held in the wedding barn.
